The Line

The University of Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture 2020/21 Joint Design Studio considers the “Line” as a conceptual tool for creating projects that explore the historical and contemporary constructs of the line as a means to program architectonic space. The registration of the line is at once a singular gesture, a dense amalgam, a boundary, a horizon. A line is spatial, thick and thin, intentional and accidental, determinant and indeterminant, additive and subtractive – a representational tool deployed through the synaptic relationship between the mind and the thinking hand: a dynamic proposal to engage the imagination and to construct. The line is translational – the first “line” of a poem, a line in the sand – a borderline; it is political; it is as metaphorical as it is concrete and observable, and the line is a fundamental elemental—devise used by the architect to shape space and the context within which buildings perform.
